Alumni Spotlight: Tyler Ulrey, Class of 2013

Initially drawn to Humboldt to play football, Tyler Ulrey briefly flirted with the idea of joining the rugby team but, luckily for us, he wandered over to the lacrosse club’s table on the Quad instead.

A key part of some of Humboldt’s most successful teams, Ulrey’s background in basketball, track and football provided a perfect foundation for the 2012 all-conference defender to build on.

What are you up to now?
Was working in mental health for many years. Started a youth lacrosse league. Currently traveling through Mexico in a van and loving life.

How did you end up at Humboldt and joining the team?
I came to Humboldt to play football. The football guys wanted to put me on a five-year plan to graduate. I wasn’t interested in that. Early in my freshman year, I met Uriah Johnson and Tristan Carbery at a club sports tabling event. They convinced me to come out and give lacrosse a try.

What’s your favorite lacrosse moment at Humboldt? On or off the field
All of my senior year (2012-13). Going undefeated in league. Beating Saint Mary’s at home for the first time. Beating Santa Cruz away in OT for the perfect season.

Do you ever get a chance to get back to Humboldt County at all? What places would you visit or where would you go to eat/drink?
Only for alumni games. The Redwood Forest. Moondoggies. Don’s Donuts. Hey Juan’s
