After conducting a nationwide search, the Humboldt State men’s lacrosse club have agreed to terms with Jeff Bertotti to become their next head coach, the team announced Friday night.
Bertotti served the past two years as the Lumberjacks assistant lacrosse coach, helping keep the team organized and motivated during two seasons either shortened or canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We love homegrown talent so it’s great to have Jeff continue to be with the team, and now elevated to head coach,” Humboldt lacrosse foundation president Judge Taylor said. “Jeff has impressed everyone with his preparation and planning, and we can’t wait to see what he does on the field during the season.”
Hailing from the Sacramento area, Bertotti played three years with HSU as a goalie from 2010-2012. In 2012 he was named to the All-Conference honorable mention team.
As a former netminder, Bertotti said he brings a defensive mindset to the game but is looking forward to opening it up on offense as well.
“A goalie’s best friend is a potent attack, so I really want our more experienced players to press the action and give our defense some breathing room on the scoreboard,” Bertotti said.
Joining him on the coaching staff will be former head coach and Humboldt Lacrosse Hall of Famer Tony Silvaggio and former HSU player Gus Johnson. Bertotti said the team will focus its efforts in the fall on recruiting, fundraising and building team chemistry.
“Losing two seasons to the pandemic has been hard, but we’re looking forward to getting back on the field and playing together as a team,” he said.
